Vinnaithandi Varuvaya - Music Review

Post removed considering the fact that lot of Rahman fans were hurt by my review.

Some are asking me to re-review. Sorry friends. Even after repeated hearing, (as it is advised by many that ARR songs will become more and more good after we hear many times) I was not inspired by VTV songs.

Yes, the post was sarcastic and hard. But it was more of a frustration from a person like me who had enjoyed great melodies of ARR during 90s and early 2000s. Yet, there are people who claim themselves as ARR fans accept everything they get. I appreciate their bakthi towards ARR.

Thanks for visiting my blog at least for scolding! ;)

P.S: Mail to karthickphd@gmail.com if you really want to see what I posted earlier

I agree infact everyone will that all songs fall under same category, ARR has become more of an hollywood music director than indian, now thats the reason why people like you who are music enthusiasts say him "sound engineer", his recent works in tamil films are not that great ok everyone has an ordinary patch in their career.

Coming to oscar awards ARR has composed far far better songs than jai ho even he thought that it was an ordinary one, thats the " ugly beauty" of oscars at times they give it just like that and even that film isnt that great for 8 oscars and sound mixing was the other one so his recent compositions have that inclination, i hope that he would come up with some good songs for us he still has a lot in him

Coming to your review now dont you and me think in the hindsight that decision is taken by the director itself when it comes to the genre of songs in the movie, being such a great music director atleast he should have told gautham menon that " yow ne enne loosa ella songayum orey madhithiri compose panna sollra" if he tells like that(not exactly like that) then his opportunity would be in jeopardy

Finally i thoroughly enjoyed your "sarcastic" review

really a harsh review on ARR composition. ARR songs would be always in such a way that at the first time u wont like the songs..but as u hear , u will like it.
anyways i downloaded Hosanna song..it was really great to hear..

@Narayanan

May be, if the songs sound great after repeated hearing, I will surely re-review the album.

Please tell me, whether Aromila, hosanna, vinnaithandi varuvaaya,anbil avan mannipaaya seems same genre to you!?! Please,when writing a review dont write in a partiallity way. The songs are really amazing. Hope, you would come with a true review.

I didn't mean the way you have mentioned. I told that some of ARR's recent songs just don't have a defined melody (flying in air) and this kind if ARR's songs can by itself be classified as a separate genre (on sarcastic note).

IMO, all the songs in VTV kind of have no landing

As of now, what I have written is true review acc to me.

Hi, songs are really great. Its a trend setting album. Why you are expecting like aracha maavey araikanum'. Rahman a trend setter. It takes time to grow in case of every Rahman album.you may feel different because the indians songs are usually in the saranam-pallavi-saranam order. But, Rahman composed a unconventional way of composition. So, its usual that people oppose whenever new things comes. But, you know what already the album is going on a recording sales and amazon.com is informed out of stock now. Also, number one album in asia now. My humble request,if you are real illayaraja fan, dont come up with this type of reviews like insulting the singers as just like that.

I must say that I totally disagree with your review or what you define as "scribbles". ARR has always been a path breaker as far as his music compositions are concerned. The "landing" melody you're talking about doesn't define music in totality. In fact, there's no hard and fast rules that music should be set in a particular way. To quote your words, "flying in the air" can also be defined as a genre of music! Nevertheless, problem arise when a person has been listening to the same genre of music for years and grow to believe that the particular genre is what defines music. As such, any music which divert from the usual genre is looked down as mere "sound engineering".

Coming back to your review, it's clear that you are not accustomed to rock music. If it has, "Aoramale" wouldn't have been defined as "singer singing in pain" or "oppari".

I find that your scribbles on the other songs are just that...scribbles!

Probably having a little more knowledge in music might help you in giving a comprehensive music review in future, instead of giving rude and sarcastic remarks on the singer.

@Narayan,

Jyosier sonnaaraam "intha varusham poora unakku romba panakkashtam". "Appa adutha varusham kashtam theenthudumaa?" "Illa...pazagipoidum".

I dont want to get used to being poor, I want to be rich (I mean music here). Why would I want to here it again and again in order to like a song that I dont like the first time?

@Karthik, I infact havent heard the songs from this film, but your review reflects in a bigger perspective how I (and many IR fans) feel about ARR's composing. As you rightly said, ARR is "sound engineer" and IR is "melody king" :-) i am a first time visitor to your blog through the search for the song "sevvarali thotathilae". Your review on that song is fabulous!

Whatever may be the reason given, this album is very disappointing. U cant even single out one song to be a standout one. Nevertheless, it is not a bad album, but a very disappointing one from ARR, given that he composed this for Gautham Menon...

Not sure what you posted earlier. I came across this one -http://chiselandrock.blogspot.com/2010/01/music-vinnai-thandi-varuvaya.html which I seem to agree with.

I think this is one of ARR's best works in recent times. Bought the CD last week and loved Omanapenne, Hosana and Aaromale right away. Its a very different album but its definitely not bad work. The other songs are also good. But my pick are Omanapenne and Aaromale.

Aaromale is distinctively AR's masterpiece that no other composers i've heard come ever close. Imagine a Led Zeppelin-like number given a touch of Indian classics. That to me is a genius! A dissapointing album?? It isn't fair to expect an album thats mainstream coz AR's touch is always an evolution to the Indian music industry and i shall say is i'll nvr give up waiting for more.
