Sabarimala - Why do men flock in?

With 45-50 million devotees going every year, the world's 2nd largest pilgrimage (after Hajj in Mecca), me questioning why people put Mala and visit Sabarimala in large numbers may sound silly.

Yes, Lord Iyyappan may be a powerful god (Other Gods have less power and are in need of glucose eh? [;]) but there should be some more attractive things. One could be the kind of clean feeling which Individuals get with 2 times bath, sandal thilak etc. It could also be the respect (at least orally) which others show calling 'Saami'.

No no, I am not satisfied. There should be something more.

Yeah, now I got the clue.

It is the restriction to women (typically aged between 13-50) which should be one of the most important attracting feature of Sabarimala.

"What?? Karthik, Are you crazy?"

Any man would recall he being Bachelor as the best part of his life. Post marriage life is hectic to the core. Wife, children, electricity bill, telephone bill, motor pump repair, aging parents...... Hoof.....Men just get stuck up with all these commitments. Don't we see men telling "It has been years since I saw a movie in theatre". Of course, even women get equally(or even more) committed and become busy. It is unfortunate that women don't get any opportunity to hang out.

For men, Sabarimala is the savior. More than Sabarimala, it is the tour they plan which gains importance.  Free from office. Free from doing driver duty for children dropping them and taking them back from school. Free from scoldings of wife [:P]. Free from mother's complaints about wife [;)]. 1 week Bachelor life. Enjoy!!!!!!

Some one is going to stand on me shouting "You are an atheist". I can't say anything but "Swamiye Saranam Iyyappa!" [:)]

P.S: I have never put Samarimala Mala (may be because I am not yet married [;)]). So my views are completely secondary. I have taken typical middle class family as example (not people who go in car, take short route and finish Sabarimala dharshan in 1 or 2 days)

It would've been better had you been an atheist. :D
Was reminded of this quote by Will Durant - "A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself within."

Nevertheless, like you said, Swamiye Saranam Aiyappa.
:-)

Its your version of it

There are many AFAIK who feels No non-veg, Hot drinks, smoking etc etc and they fall under different category, many want to be free from these for sometime

You no need to be an Atheist to write about this topic, Do you??

You are a big time bugger karthik...

Sick and tired of your view on women...sad fellow...even women are equally disgusted with the on going life...i saw my chitti asking for a break from the daily routine...but lucky "guys", they always find a way out!

See i can go for a day or two without my nanna(dad), but never my amma(mom)!
This is just one part of it!

The second part of it is...they(the swamis') devote themselves as devotees every year, to purify themselves orally, physically as well as mentally. It needs a lot to do it for 41 days and go all the way to the tip of the country and end their deeksha :)

According to me it is a test, rather than a mere break from routine...because routine is far more easy and convenient than taking up the deeksha for 41 days! :)

//even women are equally disgusted with the on going life//
Didn't I say that in my post?

//See i can go for a day or two without my nanna(dad), but never my amma(mom)!//
Why did you tell this?

//because routine is far more easy and convenient than taking up the deeksha for 41 days!//
Let me see whether you tell the same after your marriage :)

@ Karthik...1)i missed on that point...
/See i can go for a day or two without my nanna(dad), but never my amma(mom)!
Why did you tell this?/
because...children can't leave their mother...they can let go their dad for a day or two...so they go outing...[:P]

/*//because routine is far more easy and convenient than taking up the deeksha for 41 days!//
Let me see whether you tell the same after your marriage :)*/

I did not mean the other way as you mentioned...i was just trying to convey that it is difficult to go through a tough routine...where as in routine daily life you let go certain things..it is okay if you skip certain events or things...or your day to day doings...

Sorry Karthik , I strongly warn you .. because you are fundamentally attacking the belief of many Hindus. Do you know if no sabarimala or tirupathi , Hinduism would die .. These two are the meccas and vatican city of hindus and vice versa...
Instead of male patriot you are becoming a male chauvinist.. I wonder as a brother of 3 sisters how can you let women down ...
Sabarimala ,sometimes act as a vacation for some people but we can not generalize .. not but not least "Sabarimala" unites many and purifies many atleast temporarily .. i wish it should be permanent ..

Atheist is the name given to people by non-atheist people but you are a rational thinker rather than an atheist .. So think rationally in a more better manner

What a pity!? Hinduism's life is in some materials!!!!! I never thought Hinduism will approach such a pathetic situation.

//I wonder as a brother of 3 sisters how can you let women down//

Where did I let them down? I was actually feeling pity on them.

//Sabarimala ,sometimes act as a vacation for some people but we can not generalize .. not but not least "Sabarimala" unites many and purifies many atleast temporarily .. i wish it should be permanent ..//

Even tried to convey something of that sort

//So think rationally in a more better manner//
Saringa na :)

Yes your blog intention is really good but it does not completely convey the core meaning but i have understood from your reply to your comments .. I thought you have written sarcastically .. It would be effective if your blog reaches people so called just-for-fun-sabarimala-goers :) One more thing Veera-vaishnavites should not show thoughts here explicitly :) just now i attended Iyyapa pooja .. i do not come under veera vaishnavaites :)

Karthick I can't accept your point. Because its not like a tour what we went in school college days. U can't even have food properly till we see Ayyappa after dharshan only returning to tamilnadu we will have good food. And ur saying that leaving the family for one week and enjoy but u know one thing we don't have assurance that we will return back from Sabarimalai Ayyappa dharshan that y we will not say anything time of leaving like poitu varan ....
Really its not fun or joke to go for Sabarimalai and return. But I can accept some are going in that mind but some how they will come to know one day about Ayappa
Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa...
Ayappan in magimai un vaiyulum swamiye saranam Ayyappa vanthathu ...
